A 10" picture disc version of the song "The Garden" was released as part of the Record Store Day Black Friday sale, limited to 3, copies. Snakes Arrows is the eighteenth full-length studio album by the Canadian rock band Rush.

It was released on May 1, On March 12, , the band unveiled a new website at the official Rush website, primarily to promote the album. The first single from the album, "Far Cry", was posted as on-demand streaming audio on this site at that time. The band also announced that the single was being released to North American radio stations. On May 8, , the band announced the release of a video for "Far Cry", and on June 1, , "Spindrift" was released to radio stations as the album's official second single.

In promotion of Snakes Arrows, Rush kicked off their planned intercontinental tour on June 13, in Atlanta Georgia, which is set to run through October and cover most of North America and Europe. The third single for the album, "The Larger Bowl" was released in late July to North American radio where it has been positioned within the top 30 of the Mainstream Rock and Media Base Mainstream charts. The album debuted at number three on the U.

Billboard , selling about 93, copies in its first week. The pair began the writing process by jamming, which gradually molded their ideas into completed pieces. During this process, drummer Neil Peart wrote preliminary lyrics for the songs — a creative method the band has employed frequently on their earlier works. Peart, originally from the Toronto area, has lived in Southern California since To continue working with his bandmates for the new album, he commuted to Ontario and New York throughout the writing and recording phases.

When Peart was in California, the band occasionally collaborated over the Internet. By March , rough versions of six songs had been completed. The three band members met in Quebec to listen to the material recorded thus far. In May , they refined the songs in a small professional studio in Toronto. After the first six songs were recorded, the band set out to write and record additional songs in September.

American producer Nick Raskulinecz, famous for his work with the Foo Fighters, was hired to assist the band in producing the album. Raskulinecz, a self-proclaimed fan of the band, reportedly encouraged the band members to explore the limits of their renowned talents and enthusiastically encouraged the band to incorporate the complex rhythmic and melodic patterns that characterized their earlier works.

For the engineering of the album, Raskulinecz used vintage microphones for several applications. Neil Peart's customary essay on the writing and recording of the album, called The Game of Snakes and Arrows, has been released on the Rush website. Credits adapted from the liner notes of Psychic. So this one's is just okay. The CD has been disparaged because of the extended jams on "Great Black Hole" and "Winter," but it's kind of nice to hear the band getting down, taking their time to cook with these tunes. Carla keeps up the volume on "Wave of the Hand.

The strength of this CD is the strong guitar prowess of this former Textones star. If I were to suggest improvement, perhaps it would be variety of songwriting, making each track more distinctive. The Ring of Truth was Olson 's first studio album in six years, and it finds her in excellent form; Olson 's voice, tough but clear and full-bodied, sounds great, and the set kicks off with three especially fine originals from Olson: the tough-rocking "Loserville" and "Never Fade Away" and the moody "The Low Way.".

Several unique dialects of French, Creole, and English are spoken in Louisiana. Louisiana Creole French is the term for one of the Creole languages. Both accents were influenced by large communities of immigrant Irish and Italians, but the Yat dialect, which developed in New Orleans, was also influenced by French and Spanish. Colonial French was the dominant language of white settlers in Louisiana during the French colonial period; it was spoken primarily by the French Creoles native-born.

In addition to this dialect, the mixed-race people and slaves developed Louisiana Creole , with a base in West African languages. The limited years of Spanish rule at the end of the 18th century did not result in widespread adoption of the Spanish language. French and Louisiana Creole are still used in modern-day Louisiana, often in family gatherings.

English and its associated dialects became predominant after the Louisiana Purchase of , after which the area became dominated by numerous English speakers. In some regions, English was influenced by French, as seen with Louisiana English. Colonial French , although mistakenly named Cajun French by some Cajuns, has persisted alongside English.

Renewed interest in the French language in Louisiana has led to the establishment of Canadian-modeled French immersion schools, as well as bilingual signage in the historic French neighborhoods of New Orleans and Lafayette. In addition to private organizations, since the state has maintained the Council for the Development of French in Louisiana CODOFIL , which promotes use of the French language in the state's tourism, economic development, culture, education and international relations.

Direct negotiations with Talleyrand, however, appeared to be all but impossible. For months Livingston had to be content with tantalizing glimmerings of a possible deal between France and the United States. With this intelligence he had good reasons for thinking the worst: that Napoleon Bonaparte may have been responsible for this unfortunate act and that his next move might be to close the Mississippi River entirely to the Americans.

Livingston had but one trump to play, and he played it with a flourish. There are good reasons to believe that French failure in Santo Domingo the island of Hispaniola , the imminence of renewed war with Great Britain, and financial stringencies may all have prompted Napoleon in to offer for sale to the United States the entire Louisiana Territory.

Comparable effects may be found in music written for special occasions, oratorios, verse anthems, and settings of the Passion. Although choirs existed throughout Europe in the Middle Ages , their role was restricted to unison singing of plainchant.

Polyphony was the exclusive preserve of soloists. This state of affairs was gradually modified for several reasons. Early forms of musical notation were not precise enough to allow choral performance of even the simplest two-part polyphony.

As time went on, improved accuracy in notating pitch and time values permitted some degree of experiment in choral performance. Knowledge of the subtleties of mensural precisely measured music was at first the prerogative of a small number of initiates. The ordinary member of the plainchant choir, or schola, was not expected to understand the notation or to perform music using it. But the teaching of musical theory spread rapidly in the 14th century, and singers became better equipped and educated than they had been at any previous time.

The ever-growing wealth of the church also acted to encourage choral performance, since abbeys, cathedrals, parish and collegiate churches, and court chapels vied with each other in the opulence and perfection of their choral establishments. Laws were passed enabling royal chapels to impress that is, to seek out and enroll eligible provincial choirboys for the great central establishments, and in consequence every boy was a soloist in his own right, just as were the countertenors, tenors, and basses.

Finally, the rapidity with which composers took advantage of this situation, evolving new techniques and adapting old ones, created a tremendous surge of choral activity and composition , which the new art of music printing was to aid even further in the early years of the 16th century. Hundreds of liturgical pieces of music were written by composers during this time.

In addition to a capella pieces, other structures of Renaissance choral music included the anthem, cantata , motet , and oratorio. Most anthems were short and dealt with sacred religious themes. They were especially popular in the Anglican Church. A cantata from the Italian word "to sing" is a short piece with a solo vocalist, a choir, and musical accompaniment.

One composer closely associated with the cantata is Johann Sebastian Bach although his works would have been written slightly outside of the Renaissance period.

Dark Romanticism

Their personal torment in a vast universe is emphasized by desolate settings of icebound seas, jagged mountains and bottomless abysses: imagery that would inspire artistic, literary, and musical compositions. Along with contemporary Gothic novelists like John Polidori, author of "The Vampyre," these Romantic writers explored the mysterious, the monstrous, and the supernatural, creating powerful and imaginative works of literature.

Knopf, Cursed for his thoughtless shooting of an albatross, an act of evil against Nature, the Mariner is condemned to serve as a living warning to those who fail to appreciate the sanctity of life.

He must travel from place to place, telling the story of his supernatural encounter. The poem is both hopeful and despairing of man's ability to achieve spiritual growth. Although the Mariner can never compensate for his evil act, Coleridge shows us that man's goodness is revealed in spontaneous moments of love and his recognition of the beautiful and the sublime.

The Wandering Jew has long been associated with the Ancient Mariner. Most important authors The aforementioned Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman Melville are traditionally considered the central authors of dark romanticism.

Edgar Allan Poe It is usually considered that this author is the one who inaugurated the current. Much of his stories and poems is notable for his exploration of human psychology, particularly in regard to impulses, whether conscious or unconscious, of perversity and self-destruction. Nathaniel Hawthorne Nathaniel Hawthorne is the author of the dark romanticism that shows more links with transcendentalism. He was associated with this movement, and even lived in the Brook Farm, a transcendentalist utopian commune, although later he dissociated himself from the movement and his works are considered clearly anti-transcendental.

Gothic details like the rapping on the door and the raven's eerie presence set a mood of fear.

His purpose behind his morbid tales was to take the reader beyond the normal, everyday, rational world and into the dark recesses of the human mind. Nathaniel Hawthorne was ashamed by the actions of his Puritan ancestors. He wrote of the guilt, shame, and hypocrisy. His stories cast light on those elements that accompany the Puritan lifestyle. The Scarlet Letter is about that shame and hypocrisy in Puritan life.

The main character, Hester, is forced to wear an "A" on her clothing for her sin of adultery. Instead of seeing it as a symbol of her shame, she sees it as a symbol of the rest of the town's shame and hypocrisy. It becomes a symbol of pride and strength for her. Hawthorne also often wrote about secret sin. In "The Minister's Black Veil," he showed how we all have secret sin and should not judge others for theirs. The Dark Romantics paved the way for the great horror and mystery stories of today.

Without them, there would be no Stephen King books or horror flicks like Hannibal. The Dark Romantics are all similar because of their views of human existence.
