Though Orblivion was recorded in May , it was not released until almost a year later, due to Island Records' desire to promote it as a follow-up to U2's Pop. However, the album received a lukewarm reception from the British music press, but similarly to the case of Orbus Terrarum, it received better praise from American critics, with Rolling Stone calling it a "scintillating contrast of chaos and euphony". Higher Intelligence Agency. Oto is the third album by British electronica group Fluke, first released in In terms of style, Oto was somewhat darker than Fluke's previous Six Wheels on My Wagon, focusing on newer music styles such as big beat, rather than the uplifting house that characterised their previous work.
Both "Bullet" and "Tosh" were later released as double remix CDs, each with one disc of four remixes by Fluke themselves and one of four by other people. In hindsight- the Future Sound Of London were no doubt the most creative and interesting electronic "bands" to come out of the electronic and techno explosion of the early 90's as this compilation demonstrates.
One can see well almost and hear the best elements of ambient classical and techno mixed with a very organic almost liquid sound- and as far as production these boys were and are the best. Key moments from their catalogue are spread across this collection- from the sunrise world techno of papua new guinea and expander to the ambient beat driven classics lifeforms and cascade that literally sound like no other music before or since.
Throw in their strange take on triphop ala far out son and my kingdom and its easy to see how amazing this duo was. Amazing cinematic ambient tracks littered with one of a kind samples and the propulsive almost jungle throb of We have explosive fill out the rest of the material.
My only complaint is a few track selections and omissions mainly max and antique toy which are subpar- would have loved to see more tracks from ISDN and ofcourse nothing off their different label masterpiece The Isness appears due to legal matters. All in all- this is probally all the casual or new fan would need but both Dead Cities an agressive industrial styled ambient cd and ISDN weird live recorded triphop radio transmissions with free from jazz touches along with the Isness modern pyschedilia are all highly recommended.
Heres hoping a dvd comp of their amazing video and film projects comes soon. You will own most of this already. This taught me a valuable lesson: Read the reviews first! I got this and realized that I have everything on it already. But, if you are unfamiliar with them, it is a good buy.
They definitely picked the good stuff for this comp. One person found this helpful. See all reviews from the United States. ISDN , named after the high-speed connection that made these ventures possible, compiles a variety of cuts from four different sessions, including one with Robert Fripp. All four were live performances, with only new material appearing on ISDN itself, making it a fine standalone collection of intrinsic value beyond its gee-whiz factor. While not a cohesive listen like Lifeforms by default -- the selections aren't organized in chronological fashion -- all are edited together to provide a reasonable enough simulation of a standalone performance.
Stylistically the duo explore both the experimental reaches of Lifeforms ' unsettling ambient approach and the rougher sounds which would come to dominate on Dead Cities. Similarly aggro efforts appear, like the steady, booming breakbeat echo and intense synth bassline on "Slider. Besides Fripp, there's one other guest on the album -- sort of: John Williams gets some of his acoustic bass work sampled for a core loop on "Smokin Japanese Babe," which predates the commercial explosion of trip-hop by mere months.
