They want the world to know Mary Jo for who she truly was — not just for the tragic victim at Chappaquiddick. Kennedy and committed herself to his vision of compassion for the underprivileged, social idealism tempered by political realism, and a more humane nation. It was at a reunion of the Boiler Room Girls that she accepted a ride from Edward Kennedy — a decision she would pay for with her life.
I look forward to reading the book. I remember watching the crowd enter and exit St. I remember Ted Kennedy wearing that neck brace. When I was asked to cover the cross-country timed road race featuring antique, classic and vintage cars, I was thrilled.
The race began in Anaheim, California, and snaked across the U. They all returned to Wilkes-Barre after the race was completed. It was an unbelievable event that featured some of the most interesting characters I have ever met and the cars — oh, the cars — were magnificent.
Each day, we would start out and travel to a town for lunch, then get back on the road and drive to the overnight destination. We also stopped in Kingman, Arizona, where we saw many of the old locomotive steam engines and then at the Grand Canyon — magnificent.
I also got to meet, know and respect Durland Edwards, a man who loved cars. Edwards, now deceased, had a garage in Swoyersville and later lived in Tunkhannock. He competed in the event in and again in The Great American Race is not won by the fastest car — each leg of the race is timed, with specific instructions on how fast the car can go from point to point and the racer who adheres best to the instructions is judged the winner of that leg.
He was always engaging and he always had a good tale to tell of his time on the road. You could tell he enjoyed every second of the event and he was proud to represent his home area. The Times Leader sponsored Edwards in the race. I was fortunate to meet a few of The Great American Race officials. Phil Cole handled the media for the race. Norm Miller owned Interstate Batteries, the main sponsor of the race.
Cole hooked me up with Ron McQueeney who was the official race photographer. He and I hit if off. I would drive to the lunch stop, pulling over for McQueeney to get a few scenic photos of the cars rolling by. At lunch, I would interview a few drivers and then McQueeney would drive to the overnight stop while I wrote stories for the next day. Thousands of spectators came out when Wilkes-Barre served as a stop-over site in and — infusing thousands of dollars into local businesses.
Lisa Baker this week said the Senate Judiciary Committee has taken action on comprehensive probation reform intended to reduce the amount of time and resources devoted to probationers and help them fully reintegrate into society. Baker, R-Lehman Township, chairs the panel that she said took a comprehensive look at the concerns and challenges of criminal justice, increasing attention is being given to overhauling probation. SB provides an opportunity for early release from probation and ensures fewer individuals return to prison by offering incentives that reward positive behavior and participation in education, employment, vocational and drug treatment programming shown to reduce recidivism.
The other crucial elements making this a substantial and constructive improvement include: mandatory review conferences, limits on probation in most cases, and needed flexibility in dealing with violations.
Those involved in the front end of justice, including victims, warrant a say on terminating a legally imposed sentence and the transition to freedom. The bill is bipartisan in its development, sponsorship, and advocacy. Camera Bartolotta R and Sen. Anthony Williams D-8 championed the cause. Americans for Prosperity believes that helping more people successfully complete their terms of probation will make communities safer and help more people reach their potential.
The REFORM Alliance, an organization focused exclusively on community supervision, said the legislation creates a path forward for success by encouraging people to complete their probation terms in a reasonable time while simultaneously holding them accountable for wrongdoing.
Tom Wolf announced this week that since March 1, the population of those in state correctional facilities has been reduced by 3, individuals, the largest multiple-month decrease ever experienced by the Department of Corrections and one that likely helped the department reduce the number of COVID cases in facilities. Wolf said. In the three-plus months since COVID was first identified in Pennsylvania, less than 1 percent of the state prison population has tested positive. The population reduction includes furloughing paroled individuals from centers to home plans; working with the parole board to maximize parole releases; reviewing parole detainers for those in county jails and state prisons; expediting the release process for anyone with a pending approved home plan; reviewing and releasing inmates who are beyond their minimum sentences; and implementing the temporary reprieve program that has allowed Gov.
Wolf to issue reprieves to inmates during the pandemic. Wolf entered office at the beginning of January to 41, inmates today. Auditor General Eugene DePasquale this week said new audits of Medicaid service providers that receive billions of taxpayer dollars each year prove the value of additional oversight. The first round of special financial-related performance audits were authorized under Act 42 of , which was spearheaded by Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Pat Browne and received bipartisan support in the General Assembly.
The vendors provide a variety of medical and human services, including long-term care and mental health services. Three of the audits included financial-related findings that were referred to the state Department of Human Services DHS. Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding this week reminded Pennsylvanians — from kids and parents, to homeowners, to farmers — the importance of taking steps to protect our valuable population of pollinators to protect the future of food security.
Because when pollinators flourish, so does our food supply. June , is National Pollinator Awareness Week. A pollinator is anything that helps move pollen to fertilize flowers. Bees and butterflies are the most commonly known pollinators, but they also include moths, birds, flies, and small mammals such as bats. Everyone can play a role in protecting pollinators and their vital work. Avoid or limit the use of pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides in your home garden.
They can kill pollinators and poison hives. If you do use them, follow the label directions carefully. Apply to plants when they are not flowering, at dusk and when the air is calm, to limit exposure to pollinators. More bees mean a secure future for food availability, and it even means that our food tastes better.
Farms with well managed pollination can increase their production by 24 percent and well pollinated plants produce larger, more uniform fruit. To foster a healthy natural pollinator habitat, farmers are encouraged to leave some areas of their farm under natural habitat and implement hedgerows. We had good coaches back then. Anyway, when I was a young year-old member of the Bird Mining squad, Stush was trying to teach me to play the infield.
He had me at second base. Without exaggeration, if he hit 10 ground balls to me, I would boot 8 of them. It got very frustrating — especially for Stush. At one practice, Stush called me out to second base. He then tied a cinder block to my right leg to keep it from moving. Stush told me to lead with my left foot, drop my rear end and bend over, placing my glove near the ground and field the grounder. This ingenious teaching tool worked. It took a while, but he finally removed the cinder block from my leg.
It was like taking the training wheels off of my first two-wheel bicycle. I actually became a pretty good infielder, despite being sent to centerfield for a year. My last year, I was a shortstop and a pitcher. As my star rose, my dad took me to Lewis-Duncan in the Gateway Shopping Center to get a new baseball glove.
Mac Duncan recommended the Wilson A model. It was a beautiful piece of leather. Duncan told my dad and me to oil the entire glove — I believe he sold us Glovolium — then place a baseball in the pocket and tie the glove around the baseball and let it set overnight. It worked perfectly. That glove softened and had the feel of a form-fitting jacket, No ground ball would ever get past me now.
Except, of course, when I failed to drop my read end and bend over, only to watch a few get through my legs. Those were words of wisdom. Dad tied a rope to a branch of our cherry tree and he tied a ball to the rope about waist high for me.
And watch it to the bat. Hey, wait? You might not make it to Yankee Stadium, but you will learn valuable lessons that will follow you through life. Even today, I keep my eye on the ball, keep my swing as level as possible and I always know when the ducks are on the pond. And sometimes a cinder block tied to your leg will make you a better fielder and a better person. Just this week the Bureau of the Census sent out a release on the aging of the American population.
For my money, though, the most interesting part of the release was confirmation that even before the much-ballyhooed Baby Boom Generation there was another population group — the one I and about 23 million other survivors belong to.
But what really ties us together, I think, is a set of shared experiences like the one above. Here are some more. Your earliest memories are of deprivation and fear. There are elderly people today who know their fathers only through faded photos of young men in uniform, and some crumbling letters. Others, like myself, recall the family trek out of state so that a 4-F dad could still do something, such as build aircraft engines six or seven days or nights a week.
First grade was a shock. Everyone knows first grade. But for the past 65 or 70 years, the kids have been eased into it by day care and kindergarten.
