In its time, "Version 2. Garbage had been accused of formulaic, slickly produced pop by skeptics and lauded by fans as a breath of fresh air in the aftermath of grunge.
They seemed to be a band that were both loved and loathed with equal measure. History has been extremely kind to "Version 2. The album soundtracked the lives of not only myself but, also many, many others of my generation.
Shirley Manson's voice was a balm and a weapon within the same structure, her brilliant and underrated lyricism, a slashing blade and bandaid grounding each song within the confines of your headphones and conversely stretching out across the many arenas they would take their tours on.
These contradictions along with many others are what make Garbage such a band that you cannot take your ears away from. The duality of Garbage is what makes them great. Accompanying this edition of "Version 2. Collected here for the first time, the B-sides alone are worth the price of this edition. Garbage had been a music collector's dream and they never failed to make the high cost of imported singles worth it with strong material to back up the single being represented.
The remastering for this package is extremely well done without the degradation of compression and simply increasing the volume. With such clarity and beauty, I can only hope that Garbage continue these deluxe editions for "beautiful. From one fan to another, this collection is a must. I bought this on CD in or so, and it always reminds me of my final year of college. I saw them on tour in Columbus, OH, and I have great memories of the show and the night afterward. It also samples the Depeche Mode song " Master and Servant ".
It was a hit in Europe, becoming gold record in France and reaching number-one in Spain. It was also successful in Brazil, and became a big opening of a Eurodance explosion in the s.
The song received favorable reviews from music critics. A well-known acoustic version was recorded by 10, Maniacs in for MTV Unplugged , with a few lyrical alterations. The recording gained considerable radio airplay and reached No. A live version with lead vocalist Mary Ramsey was also included on their album Playing Favorites. In , Cascada recorded a version which appears on their second album Perfect Day. The music video for the single premiered on YouTube on May 28, In early , Garbage and Screaming Females recorded a cover of "Because the Night" for an exclusive vinyl release on that year's Record Store Day ; an annual celebration of independent record stores.
The band decided to record "Because the Night" with Screaming Females following some well-received duets of the track at live dates during their North American tour. Screaming Females flew from their base in New Jersey to Los Angeles to record the track with Garbage, who had set up two complete sets of instruments in EastWest Studios for the session.
They came out to Hollywood and we went into a big tracking room and recorded Phil Spector style We cut it live and did very few overdubs , did everything in a day and it came out pretty great.
Marissa plays, I think, a bar guitar solo at the end, that girl can shred like Eddie Van Halen , no kidding. Garbage used social media to raise awareness of the release, and to Record Store Day in general. The band shot a video where they professed their love for independent stores, and stated their earliest memories of shopping in them, while Manson wrote a statement about the importance of the continued existence of these stores, and of vinyl records: "In a world like ours, where we live increasingly isolated lives behind the lonely glow of our computer screens, Record Store Day reminds us all that an independent record store is worth protecting and fighting for.
They are a haven and a harbour for all curious and wandering souls. When I think I can't do things, I think about her and what she's achieved and what she continues to achieve on her own terms—always. That really inspires me. I don't know if she's aware of the cover we're releasing, or if she's aware that I covered " Kimberly " with Angelfish.
The release of "Because the Night" in the United Kingdom was delayed due to problems with the record's distributor. The band made a statement via social media the evening before Record Store Day: "We are so pissed off and disappointed about this. On May 7, , Garbage issued a digital single of "Because the Night" in the United States, which was followed a week later by an international digital release.
On March 4, , a teaser video was released to YouTube featuring clips of the band members. The cover version of "Because the Night" was positively received by contemporary music critics in advance of Record Store Day.
Billboard magazine's Hilary Hughes stated, " The highlight comes when Paternoster starts to shred. We have a feeling Miss Smith will be proud. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Album 2 brings her out more than the first. First class. Great songs. I saw them in concert and have listened to the album 50 x on remix. The guys are great musicians. Great band. Always loved this recording. And the additional tracks on the anniversary edition are very well thought out - as well as being as impeccably produced as everything else they've released.
Alternative takes that help understand the decisions made for the original release. What a concept. Some unavailable, makes me sad I love Garbage! Will be seeing her live at the Hard Rock in August. Only complaint is that not all of her songs have the Lyrics available! If so, 5 stars would have been given. Phenomenal album, and the B-sides will leave you wondering why they weren't released as a separate album. Highly recommend!
See all reviews from the United States. Top international reviews. I hesitated about buying this because I have the original and don't like spending money when I don't need to. If you are having similar thoughts, that's why I am writing this review. The sound quality of the remastering is simply amazing - sparkling clear but retaining warmth. I'm not surprised to see the glowing reviews of the vinyl. The whole band sound brilliant, but Shirley Manson's vocals are noticeably clearer - I hadn't appreciated at the time how personal these songs must have been to her; I do now.
Also, I am not writing this review through some rose-tinted nostalgic remembrance of past times. Listening to this album today, on its own merits - it sounds fantastic. The quality of the song writing and musicianship exceeds a lot of the stuff that is out there today and this is definitely one of their very best albums I'm not as keen on their later stuff. Go ahead and buy this, you will definitely not be disappointed.
Thank you for your feedback. Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again. This is an excellent collection of all Garbage's singles and B sides and is a great way to catch yourself up on the band's career. There is something quite dark and slightly off kilter about Garbage's music which will please emo's and indie fans equally. I would definitely recommend it. The remastered vinyl edition of this album sounds fantastic!
It really opens up some space in the densely layered production that allows you to hear every sonic element, some of which I hadn't even noticed in the original mix. And it's not done in an intrusive way; it remains faithful to the original spirit of the songs.
They simply sound better than they ever have before. Rarely does a remastered album get this much loving attention. It makes an already excellent album that much better! Fantastic album, and this release on vinyl is beautiful in a bright vibrant orange is lovely, with some nice photos on the inserts too.
Bit of a shame it doesn't include any of the extra songs Lick the Pavement, Thirteen or any from the 20th anniversary.Career highlight "Version " finally gets the deluxe edition it deserved 20 years ago. In its time, "Version " was an anomaly to all formats, critics and success for a rock back. Garbage had been accused of formulaic, slickly produced pop by skeptics and lauded by fans as a breath of fresh air in the aftermath of grunge/5().
