Mid Desert - Various - Enlightenment (Vinyl, LP)

Likewise, the ear-rattling sounds of dubstep weren't really meant for your turntable. Vinyl can struggle with highs and lows: High-pitched frequencies drum cymbals, hi-hats and sibilance think "s" sounds can cause the ugly crackle of distortion, while deep bass panned between the left and right channels can knock around the needle. Otherwise, "that's a hard path for a needle to trace. The beginning of an album side sounds better than the end: As the album's circumference shrinks toward the middle, the needle speed changes and it can't follow every millimeter of the groove.

If the song that closes side A or B is a complicated one — say, one with a busy harmonica solo — it may well sound less than hi-fi. That's why those double-LPs are worth the extra flipping. Surface noise: "The warm sound of the vinyl, that's a form of noise that you get from dealing with the lacquer material and having it go through this manufacturing process," Gonsalves said.

The vinyl format can generate other issues: crackles and pops, records that skip and the whine of a needle against the LP, all problems that the CD advertised itself on solving decades ago.

But for many, these sounds are just part of the vinyl experience, adding to the charm of a format that takes some extra effort — and often rewards it.

Does anyone know anything about them or the quality of their work. Here's an example:.

JohnnyZ , Sep 27, I just saw some very interesting collections in a catalog, from Enlightenment and a UK-based label called Acrobat and had hoped to find some info here about them. But this thread is all I can find - would love any comments from anyone who knows anything about either of these labels. They look like they specialize in music mostly from the mids to early 60s - I don't know if that has to do with the copyrights but I'd be curious what they are using as the source material for their releases Location: Toronto, Canada.

Maggie , Oct 25, PhantomStranger , jerrygene , melstapler and 1 other person like this. Location: Minot, North Dakota. I want hunting for information on these. I'm not hearing any giveaways of needle drop recording and there's the slight increase in high frequency information you'd expect moving from MP3 to CD, but it does sound kind of deadened and I'm wondering if there was noise reduction applied to it.

Runicen , Feb 17, I'm having a hard time really picking out distinct differences between the two tracks. There is a strangely brittle quality to the piano sound on the Enlightenment version that's hard to pin down. It hits me sometimes and not others.

Perhaps it's noise reduction? In comparing the two wave files in Audacity, the two tracks are slightly different edits with the Riverside track having a longer outro and perhaps a fraction of a second more lead-in before the track starts.

  2. Wilde Flowers (Lp) Tiger Bay Although the band never released an album during the years of their activity, Wilde Flowers is certainly to be counted among the foundation stones of the Canterbury scene of the mid-to-late Sixties.

  4. May 06,  · I also played trumpet for 8 years in various jazz bands so I'm very familiar with how it should sound. Both Farmer's trumpet and Golson's Tenor sax just seem to hang in the air, just like they do on the lp. Granted this is a small jazz combo--perhaps it might be different if it were a big band or a classical orchestra.

  8. Poor. Like "Fair", we rarely list records in this condition, as they represent the extreme low end of spectrum. These records typically have multiple serious problems, and we offer them as "relics" or "objects" only — for those who want to at least have a copy of a record, even if it is not really worthy of play, perhaps for the cover alone.
