After this album, many, many great efforts came out in the genre from a multitude of bands. So really, if you love stoner rock, or just some straight forward driving music, and you havent heard this album, you need to buy it. A landmark, a classic, and an always welcome listen and addition to any collection. One further note. You know how you cant help but simply feel good listening to something like Steve Miller?
This album has that same effect. You cant be upset jamming this. The music simply wont let you. With their debut album, Queens of the Stone Age make a powerful statement on the power of the guitar riff. Repetitive, grinding, hypnotic riffs predominate, combing with Joshua Homme's lilting vocals to create a mesmerizing atmosphere that works equally well as background noise or head-bobbing fodder.
Although the guitar riffs are the star of this album, there are a few surprises to be found as well. If you like old-fashioned guitar rock, but what's on the radio doesn't rock quite enough for you, then Queens of the Stone Age are well worth checking out. This is satisfying rock that isn't mindless, but doesn't require a heck of a lot of thought to enjoy either. It doesn't assault the senses but is chunky and heavy enough to get into my bones.
If you are, like me, a Nirvana fan of a certain age who's looking for something to find that "Nevermind" feeling again, I think you'll find this a satisfying choice. SQ - I was worried about it before I heard it because I had read so many mixed reviews from various sources on the originally released CD. No worries here, it sounds stellar and not just jacked up, it's really clean. It shows off their range just like Rated R and was probably the best lineup Queens ever showed off.
Homme's guitar sound on this album is nothing short of pure ear candy. With that said, this comes really really close. It's a different type of album than the concept oriented Songs for the Deaf, this original QOTSA album is just a straight up stoner rock masterpiece. The Kyuss vibe is still going strong in this one and there ain't nothin' wrong with that! The timeless hits are all here..
Avon, The Bronze, Mexicola. Whether it's through a good set of cans or the car stereo this is going everywhere I go for quite some time. I'd really like to thank Josh Homme for rereleasing this album so that everyone can enjoy it and not just people with a lot of extra money to burn. They are by far my favorite rock band of all time. For me nothing else even comes close. Very underappreciated here in the states. Get this album as fast as you can. Amazon was fast and secure as always and it arrived in flawless condition.
IF you ain't hooked by then you're never going to be. If you become addicted to Josh Homme and there's always a chance that will happen, go get Kyuss- Welcome to Sky Valley where the tranced out guitar work came from and Eagles of Death Metal's Death by Sexy where you can hear Josh get his Drum fix.
This is a great CD and I believe they have a follow up in the works. Check out the Desert Sessions series once you are addicted. You may also enjoy Mondo Generator featuring ex-Queens bassist Nick Oliveri another hard rock hero of mine.. I'm not sure if I could have appreciated it as much if I started with this one, or truley understood how great it really is.
It too can be purchased here and if you doubt it's credibility, look it's reviews up. Thanks Josh! You need to get Troy and the boys back in the studio and create another piece of rock history! Close to you - I will always stay Close to you - though you're far away You'll always be near - as though you were here By my side No matter where - in my dreams, I'll find you there Close to me - sharing your caress Can't you see - you're my happiness Where ever you go - my heart will go too What can I do It only wants to be - close to you.Say you! Can't hear you You're so close Wanna feel you You're so close Ah can't write now Wanna feel a hit Ah can't drive now Wanna phone you Say you! I can hear the groove I can spell the words I can climb the scale I can ride the curves I can hit the note I can drop the beat I can dance and jump I can tap the feet Can't play it very well But.
