Now There Is We feat. Brilliant remixes, all of them. Amanda Frontany. Explore music. Reworks Vol. This is cumulative club experience and the will to do things differently from time to time. This way the two Berlin based producers turn 'Waitin' For You' into a downright funky dance floor burner with contagiousness.
It's also a brilliant examination of today's club music. The first single off the album, 'Dancer', is now being released with three remixes - each of them as particular as inspiring. On the A side you get the one by Superluminal. After the three guys from Warsaw, Fabian, Greg and Cbass, have provided their typical funky sound to the remix of Jazzanova's 'I Human' last year, they were eventually first choice for a rework of 'Dancer'.
The track now even more makes you get a move on and grooves thanks to a fresh rhythm guitar and added percussion right across the dance floor with a big feisty grin. As you know funk appears in different shapes and forms though. The one by the remixing duo of the hour comes in much more sec and impulsive. The arrangement has been totally disposed as well - everything pointing towards 5 o'clock in the morning, the time when sweat and tears of joy start to blend.
The third remixer isn't a new name in Sonar Kollektiv's stable as well. He owes less to the dance floor than to the things that happen afterwards, after a long night out. His remix of 'Dancer' displays again impressively why he is one of the leading spearheads of chillwave.
The original is put through the mill so drastically that in the end only the essence of it is left over. And in a medicative way or so this just feels so damn good. On April, 20th the sixth Record Store Day will take place.
A brave move which succeeded fairly and fittingly pays tribute to one of the most talentend musicians of our times. Matt Karmil is less known as a remixer, but more as a versatile session musician and producer.
The fact that he now found some time to give an existing track his very personal note is Sonar Kollektiv's achievement and our luck. An outrageous attempt.
One of the centre pieces of his current album "The Colors Of Hope" is not describing the political situation in Syria, it's more of an autobiographical tale about the golden voiced German- Eritean's life. These four remixes are irrespective to this fact. What Stuttgart based Johannes Brecht has done to the track is almost an imposition.
A six minutes long intro packed with an arsenal of hi hats culminates in a shatter pated crescendo only to decay shortly after with an outro nearly as long.
A brave hearted stroke of genius! The man with a Classical music education sounds like the new savior of techno. So it's not really a surprise that none other than Henrik Schwarz released Brecht's first original material on his own label Sunday Music last year. The French, who is a devoted ambassador of emotional nu house for almost a decade, reconstructs a super deep shuffle beat and adds a stellar Jan Hammer-like synth line around FETSUM's vocals.
And not only by jazz afficinados as a matter of course. Renegotiations of the licensing contracts concluded in having the compilation now finally obtainable in digital format.
As an encore there are four additional tracks available out of the - Seria Jazz' by the former Communist Romanian national record company Electrecord. The founded record label is - similar to the GDR imprint Amiga - infamous for its poor quality regarding recordings as well as pressings. At the 'Time Tools Mastering' studio in Hannover the songs were treated in order to shine in a new light and now sound much better than the outmoded communist originals.
Two of the four extra tracks have been pressed on 7' vinyl. The McCoy Tyner of the East tickles the ivories in such a sophistcated style as if the one and only John Coltrane is accompanying him.
The comparison isn't flawed because next to Dan Dimitriu on bass, Nicolae Farcas on trombone and Mihai Farcas on drums, Dan Mandrila on tenor sax is actually really reminiscent of the legendary late 'Trane'.
The flip side provides further evidence with 'Sonet' off Mandrila's own album 'Alter Ego' from Backed up by the same line-up as on side A except for Marian Toroimac on drums and supplementary Radu Goldis on guitar, Costin Petrescu on percussion and Idu Barbu on synthesizer Dan Mandrila displays impressively that even without any socialist doctrine he would have been the most important saxophone player of Romania.
The fusion piece 'Sonet' can easily stand up to any US production of the same age. And now. It didn't take long therefore until an official remix request for Lana Del Rey's "Summertime Sadness" dropped in.
As much fun as it is for Fischer to do reworks of existing tracks, as eager one now awaits his own original material. And you can be assured: he has accumulated quite a lot. His 12inch for the "Based On Misunderstanding" series on Sonar Kollektiv is a stroke of genius in every sense. With "Deep Field" he connects the dots between deepest house and ethereous space boogie somewhere along the reference points of John Daly and Space Dimension Controller.
Its electrifying bass line and a Balearic guitar break make "Mystic Mountain" catch the spirit of the times right on. With all the ideas stuck in this single track others would have filled a whole album.
Obviously Fischer will be flooded with remix inquires over the next few months. Which will hopefully still leave him with enough time to start working on his debut album. Who doesn't want more of this! Sonar Kollektiv presents: The genius of Phil Gerus. With this brand new 6-track EP, the first release for Gerus on a major label - Sonar Kolletiv can lay claim to introducing a large talent to a wide audience. Joe Bataan has always been a favourite of Jazzanova.
His unique blend of latin, soul, funk and jazz is an inspiration, not only for Jazzanova. In this vibrant melting pot of vast cultural influences he soon developped his own style and became one of the biggest star of the booming boogaloo scene. With his hits for the imprint, he helped Fania Records to become the biggest Latin label by the late 's and founded Salsoul Records in , which he later sold to the Carye brothers. In , after recording 10 albums and numerous singles, he retreated from his music career.
Only in he came back with an new album and is touring since then on a regular basis. Throughout this all, Bataan's signature song has remained one of his earliest: 'Ordinary Guy,' first recorded back in An original composition, the song bespeaks Bataan's around-the-way demeanor and self-perception. For all his career highs and lows, he's remained, at the core, just an ordinary joe: 'It's been my moniker for a long time.
You know, hey, I'm an ordinary guy. Don't expect anything else. I mean, that's me, and I've always been that way. The rework by Jazzanova, with newly recorded vocals by now yeras old Bataan, is much more than just an update of this timeless classic.
The fantastic drum break in the middle of the track and the kinky rhythm guitar licks as well as the lively bass provided by Jazzanova live band members Arne Jansen and Paul Kleber are so right on the money that probably even Booker T.
Next to two out of the fifteen tracks off the compilation an exclusive remix by Alex Barck of Unforscene's "Dark Souls". The second remix 12inch for Jazzanova's 'I Human' is another stunning collection of reworks by some of today's finest club music producers.
Over the last few years Danny Berman aka Red Rack'em has built a steady and devoted following including Gilles Peterson - primarily with original material for labels like Tirk, Undertones or Bergerac and also his own imprint Red Rack'Em. His remix has the Berlin deephouse stamp all over it but is still edgy enough to stand out in the middle of any DJ set - even outside of Berlin.
Within the whole 'I Human' remix package this is probably the funkiest 12inch of them all. With tons of remixes they packed in their hand luggage over the last three years or so they still came up with a rather original idea for this one right here.
Deconstructing the track to bits and piecing it back together to form a stormer for the dancefloor. Hands up in the air guaranteed! The musical connection between Berlin and Detroit has always been a very strong and inspring one.
Jazzanova continues this close dialogue by putting Mike Huckaby in charge of remixing their latest song I Human. Huckaby is one of the unsung heroes of Detroit techno.
The South African singer and musician has been working on his material for over six years under the enigmatic moniker EnaWadan before finally exhibiting his productions to a worldwide audience thanks to Sonar Kollektiv's signing.
The spirituality of his alias which means literally translated "I am everything in anything" can also be heard in his creative output. His African background and heritage looms very large in his approach to produce contemporary dance music. But don't try to limit him to his sophisticated rhythm structures. After extensively touring all around the globe over the last few years Jazzanova finally went back to the lab. During last November the loose collective of stand-out musicians members of the Jazzanova live band spent some time together in the prestigious and legendary GDR Rundfunk Orchestra studios in East Berlin.
Over several sessions most of the songs they have been performing live lately to critical and public acclaim were put to tape.
This unique endeavour has been filmed and some of the footage can soon be seen in the video clip for the brand new song "I Human". Micatone's new album, 'Wish I Was Here', has just been completed.
For the first time, singer Lisa Bassenge and her band recorded the new pieces entirely live. After three successful albums, which were recorded as part of Jazzanova s label Sonar Kollektiv in the spirit of the Berlin electronic music scene, the band is now turning to a more backto-the-roots way of making music.
This is also due to the bands constant desire to play their music live and in front of audiences. Handbrake 2. Asian Man 3. Souvenir 4. Save Me 5. Break My Heart 6. Dizzy Day 7. Pearl Driving 8. Sweet Pain 9. Just A Boy Wish I Didn't Miss You Gun Dog Dirty Town.
